How to pick a STELLAR design partner

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from over a decade in the brand and web game, it’s this: Not all designers are created equal.

Brand and web design isn’t just a service—it’s an art form that varies wildly based on everything from deliverables and communication style to customer experience, design vibe, taste, post-launch support, and 👏🏼 so 👏🏼 much 👏🏼 more!

Just like any other master of their trade, brand and web design is not a “pocket change” investment. You’re saving up and paying out your hard-earned money, trusting all the gods that it turns out as well as you hope. So, naturally, you want a designer who’s a perfect match for your vision and goals.

What to Look For in Your Design Bestie:

A General Vibe You Enjoy: You’re going to be working closely with your designer, so it’s crucial to find someone whose energy and style align with yours. If you don’t feel a personal connection, a sense of trust, and feel supported, it’s going to be a tough journey.

Smooth Onboarding Process: The start of your project sets the tone for the entire experience. Look for a designer who has a streamlined onboarding process that kicks off your collaboration on the right foot. How to know if they have this before you begin? Ask about it!

Clear Communication: No guessing games here! Your designer should be transparent about deliverables, timelines, and expectations. You deserve to know exactly what you’re getting and when. Life happens, but if communication is iffy from the beginning, take note. No-shows are a no-go.

Understanding Your Brand’s Essence: Your designer should have the skill to bring your vision to life—even when you’re struggling to put it into words. It’s about capturing the essence of your brand and translating it into a brand that not only looks amazing but converts like crazy.

Red Flags to Watch Out For:

🚩 Poor Communication: If they ghost you during the sales process, imagine how they’ll be once the project’s underway. 🙈 Honest, open communication is key to a successful partnership.

🚩 Lack of Proof: They may talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? Make sure your designer has a portfolio that resonates with you and inspires confidence in their abilities.

🚩 Inflexibility: A cookie-cutter approach won’t cut it for your unique brand. You need a designer who’s willing to tailor their process to fit your needs and work with you to create the best experience possible, not just the one that fits neatly into a box.

🚩 Over-Promising & Under-Delivering: You deserve a designer who not only meets deadlines but exceeds expectations. Don’t settle for anything less. Not quite sure if it's a good fit? Ask about examples and past clients. Heck even reach out to past clients! Get clear where you have doubts.

🚩 Trend-Chaser: Your brand should be timeless, not just trendy. Find a designer who understands the difference between what’s “right for you” and what’s “right for right now.”

As someone who’s been both the designer and the client, I completely understand how critical these factors are—not just for your final design but for the entire customer experience. Your brand deserves the best, so do your homework and don’t settle!
